Surrounded by stunning chandeliers, unusual palm trees and overwhelming cake trolleys The Balmoral’s Palm Court had truly captured me and I wasn’t even seated yet. The calming atmosphere was perfectly matched with the beautiful harp player that was positioned up on a balcony overlooking us.

I think I was possibly one of the youngest people there, it was full to the brim of typical ‘ladies who lunch’ – meaning I was in my people watching element – and the older generation who live for their tea and cakes!

The afternoon tea consisted of six different courses – yes I did say six and that’s not including your teas and coffees, which were in fact unlimited with over 15 different infusions to choose from. My favourite item was the fresh warm scones, with real clotted cream and a selection of jams.

The service was flawless, I felt like a queen – nothing was too much hassle and they were constantly attentive to the table.

This truly was an experience to share…and brag about! Each course was beautifully presented with a detailed explanation of all items from our waiter. Each item looked like a mini sculpture and tasted incredible. There was so much food left, but I couldn’t bare to leave it so I had it boxes up and brought back to the office to share with the team!

I think I have to say The Balmoral might have taken my number one slot for best ever afternoon tea, it’s going to be a hard one to top. From the professional but delicate service to the beautifully crafted food – bring on the contender that wants to try and match the award-winning afternoon tea experience at The Balmoral!

My top tip: Book well in advance as it is extremely busy especially in August when the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is on.

Prices start from a reasonable £27 per person and can be added onto your stay at The Balmoral, Edinburgh.
