"This hilltop village in Provence, is undeniably picturesque as it is surrounded by forests and woodland, perfect for nature-lovers and those who love to take pictures, it even has a museum of photography for inspiration! I recommend Mougins as a city break for winding down and taking things at your pace. To really witness the beauty of Mougins, I recommend taking a walk through the village, this way you can witness the Saracens gate, the church of St Jacques-le-Majeur and the pretty Rue des Orfevres, where you can find many Picasso pictures and motifs. "

Mougins at a glance

Mougins is a pretty hilltop village in the Alpes-Maritimes district of Provence only 15 minutes’ drive from Cannes and 30 minutes from Nice airport.  It is one of many picturesque medieval villages in the area and is surrounded by forests and woodland which are perfect for hiking. With its hilltop location, the views across to Cannes Bay are spectacular and can be enjoyed from one of the many cafés over a delicious pastry and coffee.

Mougins is perhaps best known for the many art galleries and gourmet restaurants to be found there.  There are galleries displaying local art both in the main square and tucked away in the alleyways. Most places have paintings on display outside the gallery as well. Pablo Picasso spent a lot of time here and ultimately ended up living in the area.  Some of his work is displayed in the Museum of Classical Art along with that of Matisse and Rodin.

Perfect if you’re looking for:

  • Stunning views
  • Indulgent cusine
  • Lush surroundings

Getting around

At the heart of Mougins is the Vieux Village, the historic centre.  With its traffic free, narrow cobbled streets it is great to stroll along and explore all the little alleys filled with statues, fountains and plant holders bursting with colour.

There is a good bus service linking Mougins with Cannes and Grasse costing as little as 1 euros. Cycling is also popular but it is rather hilly so not for the faint hearted!

Dining in Mougins

Food lovers will be spoilt for choice in Mougins, with excellent restaurants in the old village and also the surrounding area providing everything from Michelin starred French haute cuisine to cosy little bistros.

Must-try local dishes:

  • Pan-bagnat – a substantial Provencal sandwich
  • Stuffed courgette flowers
  • Daube – a classic Provencal stew
