Schloss Roxburghe Hotel Overview

Location: Kelso, Scottish Borders, Scotland

The Schloss Roxburghe is an exceptional country house hotel located in the heart of the Scottish Borders. Formerly known as Sunlaws, the house was until recently part of the Roxburgh Estate, centred on the Duke of Roxburghe’s nearby ancestral home, Floors Castle.

The current mansion house dates to the early part of the 19th century and is a magnificent example of period architecture set within immaculately tended garden grounds. The interiors are exceptional featuring a wealth of classical detail with high ceilings, intricate cornice work and grand original fireplaces.

The Roxburghe offers 20 individually designed guest rooms and suites all including flat screen TVs, bathrobes, slippers, toiletries and complimentary Wi-Fi.  The hotel is dog-friendly and a dog service of water and a basket or rug for your room can be booked in advance. The extensive hotel grounds are perfect for exploring with or without a four legged friend.

The hotel’s cosy and historic 1745 bar and library with its roaring fire is the perfect place to relax and explore their wine list, enjoy a cocktail, craft gin or malt whisky. Their gourmet restaurant, Sunlaws, offers a tasty a la carte menu with the focus on locally sourced ingredients and specialities. Guests can also relax and have drinks and snacks in the hotel Drawing Room and in the State Room Lounge.

The Roxburghe has its own 18 hole championship golf course within the grounds, which runs alongside the River Teviot and has a clubhouse and pro shop. The hotel can arrange fly fishing and clay pigeon shooting as well as cycling and horse riding.

There’s a huge amount to see, do and explore locally including the pretty market towns of Kelso and Melrose and guests can also visit the Duke of Roxburghe’s Floors Castle and Abbotsford, the former home of Sir Walter Scott. The Scottish Borders are easily accessible from England and are within easy striking distance of Edinburgh, Glasgow, central Scotland and the main routes further north and west.
