Unrivalled Luxury in Monaco

27/08/2010

Neil, the Assistant Product Manager for our City Breaks department, along with his wife recently spent a weekend wallowing in the unabashed luxury of the five star Fairmont Monte Carlo in beautiful Monaco. Here is his report:

The Fairmont Monte Carlo

'Taking a direct flight from the UK it takes a little over two hours to reach the sun-kissed shores of the French Riviera.

Arriving at Nice airport, travellers to Monaco have a number of transfer options. Trying to save more cash for Monaco itself we decided to take the bus into central Nice (just 7 kilometres from the sirport) and then on to Monaco by train. Taking about 2 hours it is the most cost-effective way at approximately 10 Euros per person each way for both the bus and train. Alternatively there is a direct bus link from Nice airport to Monaco (approx 18 Euros per person each way) or for those who wish to arrive in style there is a dedicated helicopter transfer service. At only 7 minutes it is by far the quickest way to get to Monaco and won't break the bank too much at a reasonable 100 Euros per person each way.

The train journey along the Cote d'Azur is fantastically scenic, offering glimpses out across the glittering Meditterranean sea and of picture-postcard villages dotted along the coast. Arriving in Monaco we made our way straight to our hotel - the Fairmont Monte Carlo. From the get go the service in this hotel was immaculate; friendly, efficient and nothing being too much trouble. In less than 5 minutes we were checked in and taken to our deluxe sea-view room.

A sea-view room

The room was spacious and airy with large sliding patio doors leading out to a balcony overlooking the sea. For a relaxing stay the sea-view rooms are highly recommended with their stunning views. Alternatively the Fairmont rooms (also beautifully appointed)overlook Monte Carlo's famous hairpin turn - these rooms are the envy of motoring enthusiasts during the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend in May!

Another key feature of the hotel is the stunning rooftop pool with ample sunloungers and 'love bubbles' (egg shaped loungers for two with a shade attached). We made the most of the pool during our sunny three day stay.

Almost loathe to leave the luxury of the Fairmont we ventured out into the immaculate and winding streets of Monaco. There is a very efficient bus service which will take you round Monaco at low cost. Places not to be missed are the main harbour, Port Hercule, where you can see some of the most amazing yachts and a little further on 'Monaco-ville' (also known as The Rock) a protruding rock surrounded by with steep cliffs which has been the base of Monaco (and the Grimaldi family) for centuries. It is a blend of ancient buildings, gardens and narrow streets with a wide selection of restaurants and interesting shops.

Of course no trip to Monaco would be complete without a visit to the Palace. The Palace reminds you of the wealth built up by the Grimaldi family over the centuries.

Other points of interest include the incredible view from Fort Antoine across Port Hercule and Monaco. There are also the Exotic Gardens which are perched on the cliff-side with great vistas and an array of cactus and tropical plants. The beach in Monaco is man-made but offers a relaxing spot to enjoy the sea and has a great restaurant just 10 minutes walk from the Fairmont Monte Carlo through the Japanese gardens. For football fans, the unique Stade Louis 11 (home to A.S Monaco) is definitely worth a look.

Monaco by night

Dining in Monaco is something of a hobby. There is a wide range of options ranging from the very special Michelin-starred Alain Ducasse Louis XV restaurant all the way down to humble pizzerias. One thing is for sure though no matter what you eat you are in for a treat, with even the humble pizzerias offering an excellent standard of cuisine. (Perhaps being so close to the Italian border helps).

Last, but by no means least, you have to sample the millionaire lifestyle, even if you don't want to spend the money! A must do is window shopping around the fantastic boutiques close to the famous Monte Carlo Casino, where you will find fashion from the world's most celebrated designers. The stunning Casino is housed in a magnificent building - have a look inside and marvel at the opulence.'
