The Moulin Rouge is the world famous nightclub which is an essential part of any city break to Paris.
Situated in the red light district of Pigalle, close to Montmartre, the red windmill on its roof makes it an easily recognisable landmark. The venue has become famous as the home of the traditional French can-can, which is still performed there today.
In the early days of the Moulin Rouge the dance was more than a little crude and the venue had a reputation as a 'high class brothel'. Over the years however the vulgarity of the dance lessened and nowadays the can-can is renowned for its athletic and acrobatic tricks. The dancers wear long skirts with frilled undergarments and perform high kicks, splits, cartwheels normally accompanied by squeals and shrieks. The choreography has always been intended to be a little risque and provocative.
